You’ve watched hundreds of videos, read a bunch of books, looked at tons of pictures, envied the pros in tournaments you’ve been to.
You’ve bought a bunch of swing aids, taken lessons from a coach, listened to advice from your golf buddy ‘experts’.
You’ve spent thousands on the best clubs, every conceivable composition of ball, and any other gadget that might get you that extra bit of distance, that few degrees more of accuracy… that makes you feel powerful, flexible, smooth and in control through your swing, so you can bomb it down the middle of the fairway landing it exactly where you want.
YET TO NO AVAIL. You are still hitting exactly the way you did before you invested all that time, effort and money. WHY?
It’s a relationship break down. You hear it all the time in the movies. You may have even heard it in your own relationship bust ups in the past. “It’s not you, it’s me!”
It’s not your clubs, balls, gloves, grips, your understanding of golf swing mechanics, or even the great advice your coach has given you and the video tutorials you have watched. It’s You.
How often have you been told, instructed or encouraged to “rotate you hips more, that you need more shoulder turn? “
“Don’t forget to start your downswing with your legs, transfer your weight to your lead leg first. Keep your right elbow tucked in on your downswing, drop into the ‘slot’, point your lead elbow at the target, delay your wrist release, all to shallow out your swing to produce greater club head speed and control…then you can hit up at impact for greater control, distance and accuracy.
And that’s just for your driver. When you need to hit a mid iron shot some of those swing parameters change, and are slightly different again with our short irons.
But wait, that’s not all the events that need to be coordinated to hit your driver long, straight, consistently and accurately.
Sometimes you feel like you have solved it at the range. You’ve applied the advice and had a great session, bombing the ball down the middle, but when you get out on the course it all goes pear shaped and you find yourself back at square one.
The range, as good as it is, is a false environment, and its sometimes easy to compensate the short time you are there.
Often you don’t even realise what, if anything, you have done that has made the difference, but you get to the course, and have been bragging to you golf buddies how at last you have fixed your driving woes, only to shank a drive off the tee. A shot completely lacking power and direction.
You know instantly that you’ve been kidding yourself and the rest of your game that day is doomed.
It’s frustrating because you know what the problem is. You can feel the part of your swing that’s not doing what it should. Yet no amount of practice on the range, direction from your coach or rounds of golf on the course seem to improve your driving.
What I’ve discovered is that in many cases you can’t manage one, two, three or more of these important components of your golf swing simply because your body won’t allow you too.
You could be hitting hundreds of golf balls and trying really hard to change or improve your golf swing. Your instructor, the video tutorials you’ve watched, and even your good intentioned golf buddies may be giving sound instruction and advice; telling you the right thing you need to do.
BUT YOU JUST CAN’T PHYSICALLY DO IT. All that effort without result leads to frustration. You either blame yourself, your instructor, any advice you’ve been given, or your clubs.
Your Limits
Physical limitations have caused a relationship break down. Bits of your body aren’t relating to each other the way they should and it’s causing a breakdown in communication.
Muscle weakness, poor muscle and body part coordination, stiff restricted joints, old habitual muscle and joint movement patterns, and inability to separate pelvic movement from your torso movement, as well as pain can all stop you from executing the great advice from your coach, or implementing the tips you’ve picked up from videos and books.
Communication lines are down and there’s no connection…there’s no coordination. All, or at least some, of your bits are trying to do it alone… in isolation.
If you are passionate about golf and want to get better at your game it’s good to know what you are physically capable of doing. You don’t want to work on your golf swing and get hurt. You don’t want an injury that may stop you from playing the game you love.
If you’ve been trying to get better but struggling and you believe in what your instructor/s are saying, it’s not the instruction. It’s your body that is the lynch pin; the bottleneck that is stopping you from improving.
The ultimate solution to produce the smooth easy, powerful, controlled swing that unleashes the hidden power in your body is to fix all those things that are out of whack.
To strengthen weak muscles, re-coordinate muscle and joint movement patterns, deal with your pain and restore youthful mobility. Get you body parts ‘talking’ to each other again.
